Indications:
Folic acid is prescribed to correct a deficit in folic acid.
Megaloblastic anemia is a kind of anemia in which the red blood cells
Anemia caused by a lack of iron in the diet, pregnancy, infancy, or childhood.
Pharmacology:
Dihydrofolate reductase converts folic acid to tetrahydrofolic acid and methyltetrahydrofolate because it is biochemically inactive (DHFR). Endocytosis transports these folic acid congeners throughout cells, where they are required to sustain proper erythropoiesis, create purine and thymidylate nucleic acids, interconvert amino acids, methylate tRNA, and make and utilise formate. Folic acid can lower elevated homocysteine levels by remethylating homocysteine to methionine via methionine synthetase, which uses vitamin B12 as a cofactor.
Dosage (breakdown or, not) :
Adult:Â
Initially: 5 mg daily for 4 months.

Pregnancy:Â
There are no recognized specific precautions.
Precautions & Warnings:Â
In patients with folate-dependent tumors, it should be used with caution. For the treatment of undetected megaloblastic anemia, it should never be given alone or in combination with insufficient levels of vitamin B12. Although folic acid can cause a haematopoietic response in patients with megaloblastic anemia caused by vitamin B12 deficiency, it should not be used alone in vitamin B12 insufficiency since it can cause subacute mixed cord degeneration. Before starting long-term folate therapy, a cobalamin absorption test should be performed in elderly adults. Short courses of folate had no negative effects.
