Generic Name
Besifloxacin 0.6% Eye prep
Precaution
? This drug is for topical ophthalmic use only and should not be injected subconjunctivally, nor should it be introduced directly into the anterior chamber of the eye.
? As with other anti-infectives, prolonged use may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If superinfection occurs, discontinue use and institute alternative therapy.
? To prevent contamination do not touch the tip of the dropper to eye, eyelid or any surface of the affected eye.
? Patients should not wear contact lenses during the course of therapy with this drug.
? Shake well before use.
Lactation: Excretion in milk unknown; use caution
Indication
Bacterial Conjunctivitis
Contra Indication
This drug is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to Besifloxacin, to other Quinolones or to any of the components in this formulation.
FDA has not yet classified the drug into a specified pregnancy category.
Mode of Action
Bactericidal
Inhibits DNA-gyrase (a topoisomerase) in susceptible organisms, which in turn inhibits cell division.

Pregnancy
There are no available human data during pregnancy to inform any drug-associated risks; however, systemic exposure to besifloxacin from ocular administration is low; oral administration of besifloxacin to pregnant rats during organogenesis or during pre/postnatal period did not produce adverse embryofetal or offspring effects at clinically relevant systemic exposures
Lactation
There are no data on presence of drug in human milk, effects on breastfed infant, or on milk production; however, systemic exposure to besifloxacin following topical ocular administration is low, and it is not known whether measurable levels of besifloxacin would be present in maternal milk following topical ocular administration
The developmental and health benefits of breastfeeding should be considered, along with mother?s clinical need for therapy, and any potential adverse effects on breastfed infant from treatment
Adult Dose
Adults: Instill one drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times a day for 7 days.
Child Dose
Children (1 year of age and older): Instill one drop in the affected eye(s) 3 times a day for 7 days.
